Ship Shape For Bristol But Not Always Our Hearing

The modern Royal Navy traces its origins to the early 16th century; the oldest of the UK’s armed services, it is known as the Senior Service. Todays battle fleet has advanced in technology and has the ability to cover underwater, overwater and the air which makes it a force to contend with, particularly in regards to defending our shores.

Support For The Rough Sounds Of The Sea

Like our sister services, the Royal Navy operates noisy and aggressive equipment which can have a profound effect on hearing. Particularly in Engine Rooms, firing off weapons and launching aircraft but once again, it is not always possible to wear hearing protection, particularly when action has to be taken quickly and effectively.

We must never forget what our Veterans have done to maintain the peace, and help those in serious need and support which is why UK Veterans Hearing Foundation is going to continue being there for them with the highest level of support and care..

Our Navy Success

My name is Dave Walton. I joined the Royal Navy in July 1971. It was the best decision of my life.

I joined HMS Blake and visited many countries and in 1972 we went into a 12 month refit. All hands pitched in. I was a signalman so our responsibility was the flight deck. We began taking paint off back to metal, using a windy hammer. No Personal protection equipment other than overalls. We spent weeks using this equipment, and didn’t really think about all the noise at the time…

…The outcome was that I needed two hearing aids. After a while, I got authorization to proceed. What a difference! I’ve got a pair of the latest and most advanced aids – Phonak Marvel M90s – which are rechargeable too!!! They are fantastic!!
