The Royal Air Force Top Gun Noise Machines

Per Adua ad Astra (“Through adversity to the stars” or “struggle to the stars”) may be the motto for the Royal Air Force however, life can be a struggle to many who have served, particularly with their hearing. It is not uncommon to prepare aircraft and supporting equipment to ensure that our skies are safe from adversaries and that we can live in confidence that, the ‘boys and girls in blue’ know their job.

Making sure your hearing flies..

Aircraft have developed over the years, particularly through the jet age to fast and furious deterrents which are not the quietest of machines and, during operations or exercises, a fast turn-around or launch is required to get the job completed. Ear defenders were not always available and those provided, not the best restrictor for intense sound. Those of you who have attended air shows will know the noise level generated by fast jets and associated aircraft when flying but, those who have to work in close proximity to get them airborne; the noise is quite ferocious.

Like our sister services, all RAF personnel are expected to be able to use small arms and regularly train with them in preparation for operations and normal annual defence training. This is often carried out with minimal hearing protection which has only just started to be of an acceptable level.

Helping Irreversible Damage

So the result is that many having served in the RAF suffer from a high tone hearing loss that cannot be improved with standard hearing aids and require specialist knowledge and equipment to give back that quality of life for both the Veteran and their families. We at UK Veterans Hearing Foundation are committed to help all of our Veterans gain a better quality of life and as the RAF Motto says – We all have to pass through some rocky times to reach the outer limits of what you want (or the stars) and we will be there to start you on that journey as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

Our RAF Success

Mr Woodthorpe has known our founder Samantha Bennett for 14 years and is one of the veterans we were able to fit with a hearing aid, whilst we fight to get more funding we thought it would be an uplifting story to share –

“When I was in the RAF mainly in Singapore, we used to test Rolls-Royce Merlin Engines and it was in the open, it wasn’t an enclosed testbed.

It was extremely loud but you know in those days we had nothing to cover your hearing up, and on the latter parts of my airforce career I was working on jet engines and I went to Rolls Royce to work on them…

My hearing aids are quite a boom, when I’m sleeping on my bed I can’t hear if someone enters the room if I have them off.
