HM Government | The National Lottery Community Fund

Players of the UK National Lottery play every month for their chance to win a fantastic jackpot. Part of these proceeds to go local UK communities including charities like ours, in order to help build infrastructure, develop new helpful programs and help to fund charitable causes. The HM Government work in partnership with them in order to be able to give out grants like the one we have received in order to help organisations across the whole of the UK, they have kindly allowed us to apply for the Coronavirus Community Fund.

We'd like to sincerely say Thank You to HM Government and The National Lottery Community Fund for helping The UK Veterans Hearing Foundation

Why The UK Veterans Hearing Foundation?

The Charity is dedicated to helping Veterans correct their hearing after years of working in the Services, whether that be the Arm, Navy, RAF, Royal Marines or any other branch of the UK Military. Hearing loss causes thousands of Veterans each year to feel isolated in their surroundings and not be able to socialise, work to their full potential or interact with their families. During the lockdown of COVID-19 this has become a larger problem with the requirement of technology use and facemasks.

How will this be used to help Veterans?

The funding provided will be used to help combat isolation for chosen veterans by providing them with a top-of-the-range hearing aids, a lot of NHS funded hearing aids don’t allow for functions that are required by Veterans that have suffered from more severe levels of hearing loss. This can cause a wide range of communication problems between the Veterans and their loved ones, resulting in feeling isolated and unable to engage in conversation.

We are also looking to fund Facebook Portal devices that will be able to be used with Veterans that are currently self isolating or are in the high risk group for contracting COVID-19 in order to allow them to digitally connect with and facetime their family members or people who would be willing to speak to lonely Veterans in order to improve their quality of life.

Another service that helps Veterans with Tinnitus is the Hearing Coach counselling sessions. Tinnitus is a very difficult condition and usually the symptom of a larger problem, a lot of people have difficulty dealing with the noise associated with it and it can have a deteriorating effect on mental wellbeing. Through Zoom and other online facetime software The Hearing Coach is able to connect with Veterans to teach them how they can learn mindfullness and take care of themselves through an 8 week course. This kind of interaction helps Veterans to deal with two problems at once, and is a step forward towards the Charity being able to help with Mental Health issues alongside hearing loss.
