It has come to notice that hearing loss has become part of daily life long after military service has ended for many veterans. The reason behind it is years of exposure to loud environments, weapons training and operational duties can gradually take their toll, making conversations harder to follow and day-to-day activities more frustrating than they should be. Our veteran Jason Newell understands this journey all too well.
He has been struggling with hearing difficulties and finding limited success with his previous hearing aids, Mr Newell recently received support through the UK Veterans Hearing Foundation. It is all thanks to the funding from The 29th of May 1961 Charitable Trust and hearing aid fitting at Hear4U Hinckley clinic; he is now experiencing a significant improvement in his hearing and quality of life.
Hearing Loss Caused by Military Service
Mr Newell has served for 9 years in the Royal Military Police; his role has regularly exposed him to higher levels of noise throughout his military career. During his service, he spent 2 years in Northern Ireland and was exposed to a variety of firearms, including rifles, pistols, and machine guns. However, the primary cause of his hearing damage was identified as repeated use of pipe ranges during weapons training.
The pipe ranges are enclosed structures used to improve firing consistency and accuracy, while they are effective for training purpose, they dramatically amplify the sound produced by weapons. The increasing noise exposure places significant strain on hearing over time. Like many veterans, the effects were not always at once obvious but over the years, however, the damage became increasingly noticeable and began affecting Mr Newell everyday life.
Everyday Challenges with Hearing Loss
A hearing assessment previously showed that Mr Newell had mild to moderately severe sensorineural hearing loss in his right ear and a normal to severe sensorineural hearing loss in his left ear. The impact of his hearing loss extended beyond simply struggling to hear sounds. One of the biggest frustrations for Mr Newell was background noise.
Whether attending meetings at work or spending time in busier environments, he often found it difficult to follow conversations clearly. He started missing important information, particularly when multiple people were speaking or when background noise competed with the voices he was trying to hear. Also, watching television had become challenging; while subtitles offered some support, they were not always available and could not fully replace the experience of hearing dialogues naturally. Similar to how many people live with hearing loss, Mr Newell found himself working harder to listen. As time passed, this increased listening effort became tiring and frustrating, affecting his confidence and enjoyment in everyday situations.
Though he has been using NHS hearing aids, he felt they were not providing him the level of support he needed to overcome these challenges.
Support Through the UK Veterans Hearing Foundation
At the UK Veterans Hearing Foundation, we work to support veterans whose hearing has been affected during military service. We help them access professional hearing care and advanced hearing technology. Mr Newell’s hearing journey was made possible through funding provided by The 29th of May 1961 Charitable Trust, which supports veterans living in Coventry and the surrounding areas. Through partnerships like this, veterans are able to receive support that can have a lasting impact on their independence, well-being and overall quality of life.
Mr Newell attended Hear4U’s Hinckley clinic for a comprehensive hearing assessment to better understand his hearing difficulties and identify the most suitable hearing solution. The assessment confirmed hearing loss in both of his ears and highlighted the difficulties Mr Newell was experiencing in noisy environments and workplace meetings. After a detailed consultation, it was recommended to him to be fitted with a pair of Phonak Audeo Lumity L90-R hearing aids.
Why the Phonak Audeo Lumity L90-R?
The Phonak Audeo Lumity L90-R is one of Phonak’s premium rechargeable hearing aid models, designed to help people hear speech more clearly in a variety of listening environments. For someone like Mr Newell who struggles to hear conversations in the presence of background noise, this technology offers a significant advantage.
The hearing aid automatically adapts to changing listening environments throughout the day, helping wearers focus on speech while reducing distractions from surrounding noise. This makes conversations easier for him to follow, whether he is in a busy café, social gatherings or family events. The rechargeable design also removes the need to regularly change batteries, while the Bluetooth connectivity allows direct streaming from compatible phones, televisions and other devices.
Perhaps most importantly, technology helps reduce the effort he needs to put into listening again. Instead of constantly concentrating on working out what has been said, wearers are able to enjoy more natural and comfortable communication throughout the day.
How New Hearing Aids Changed the Way of Listening
After Mr Newell’s fitting, he quickly noticed the improvement, while reflecting on his new hearing aids, he said: “All good my end, the difference between my old set and new ones is noticeable and I am happy with them.”
He also added the difference as “awesome”
For a veteran who had spent years struggling with background noise, workplace conversations and television listening, the improvement was immediately apparent. Being able to hear more clearly, participate more confidently in conversations and spend less energy trying to follow what is being said can make a remarkable difference to everyday life.

How Donated Hearing Aids Help Veterans
The success stories like Mr Jason Newell highlight why hearing aid donations play such an important role in supporting veterans across the UK. Many people have hearing aids stored away at home after upgrading to newer devices or no longer needing them. Rather than leaving them unused, those hearing aids can help transform another veteran’s life.
Through our UK Veterans Hearing Foundation’s hearing aid donation programme, donated devices are put to good use, helping veterans gain access to hearing technology and support. When you donate hearing aids it also helps reduce waste by keeping valuable technology out of the landfill and giving it a second purpose.
Importantly, every donation helps our charity focus more of its resources on supporting more veterans who require hearing assessments, hearing care and advanced hearing solutions. A simple act of recycling can have a lasting impact on someone’s daily life.
Supporting More Veterans Through Community Support
Our team at UK Veterans Hearing Foundation would like to thank The 29th of May 1961 Charitable Trust for supporting Mr Newell’s hearing journey and helping him access the care and technology he needed. The support from charitable trusts, organisations and hearing aid donors allows us to continue helping veterans whose hearing has been affected by military service.
Every donation, every partnership and every contribution helps more veterans reconnect with conversations, family life, and the world around them. For Mr Newell, this support has already made a noticeable difference and for many more like him, it could do the same. If you have hearing aids that are no longer needed, please consider donating them to the UK Veterans Hearing Foundation; your donation could help change a veteran’s life.
