After many years of living with increasing hearing difficulties, Army veteran Mr Victor Sherwood wanted clearer hearing and greater confidence in everyday conversations. His route to better hearing came through the UK Veterans Hearing Foundation’s Gifted Hearing Aid Pathway. By contributing towards the cost of his hearing aids, Mr Sherwood was able to access technology suitable for him, receive professional fitting, and ongoing hearing care at Hear4U Leicester. His experience highlights how flexible hearing aid pathways help us support veterans with different needs and financial circumstances.
Years of service and military noise exposure
Mr Sherwood served in the British Army for several years. His military career began with two years in the Royal Artillery, and he then served in the regular infantry roles, including with the Royal Leicesters, before completing further service with the Territorial Army infantry and the Royal Anglians. His service also included an operational tour in Borneo.
Mr Sherwood spent time in environments where loud, sudden noises were part of daily military life, as with many Armed Forces personnel. Over the years, he started to notice his hearing was becoming increasingly difficult. Military hearing loss does not always become clear straight away; hearing difficulties start to develop gradually after years of exposure to gunfire, artillery, machinery, aircraft, or other high noise levels.
Everyday conversations become hard to follow, the background noise can make speech unclear, and social occasions may require greater concentration. Over time, these difficulties can affect confidence, independence and relationships with family and friends.
Finding the right hearing support
When Mr Sherwood contacted us, our team considered his hearing needs alongside his personal lifestyle. There is no single route into hearing care that suits every veteran. Some people need fully funded support, while others are in a position to contribute towards part of their hearing care.
Our role at the UK Veterans Hearing Foundation is to understand each application and identify the most suitable available pathway. Regarding Mr Sherwood’s application, the Gifted Hearing Aid Pathway offered a practical, more affordable route. He contributed towards the cost of his hearing aids while receiving support from Charity and the professional hearing care through Hear4U Leicester. This approach helped Mr Sherwood access suitable hearing aids without meeting the full cost of private hearing care.
What is the Gifted Hearing Aid Pathway?
The Gifted Hearing Aid Pathway provides quality hearing aids that have been donated by manufacturers or passed on by previous hearing aid users. Some people have hearing aids at home which are no longer needed, and this might happen after an upgrade, a change in hearing needs or the loss of a loved one.
Where suitable, these devices can be professionally assessed, refurbished, and prepared for another wearer. This gives quality hearing technology a new lease of life, helping a veteran access more affordable hearing care. Each hearing aid must be suitable for the new wearer’s hearing loss and individual requirements. The device also needs to be professionally programmed and fitted by a qualified hearing care professional.
This pathway provides more than a pre-loved hearing aid; it includes the clinical care needed to help the wearer use the device safely and comfortably. Every application that comes to us is reviewed individually, depending on their circumstances, veterans may be asked to contribute.

Mr Sherwood’s hearing aid fitting at Hear4U Leicester
Mr Sherwood attended the Hear4U Leicester clinic to have his hearing aids professionally fitted. During his fitting, the devices are programmed according to the wearer’s hearing levels, and adjustments are made to support speech clarity and provide a comfortable listening experience across different environments.
The appointment also gives him time to learn how to use and look after his hearing aids. This may include guidance on inserting and removing the devices, charging, or changing batteries, cleaning the hearing aids and managing different settings. When it comes to adjusting to hearing aids, it is often a gradual process. Sounds that have been unclear for many years may initially feel unfamiliar, and further appointments may be needed as the wearer becomes accustomed to the device.
Here, the ongoing aftercare plays an essential role in achieving the best possible result. Through his fittings at Hear4U Leicester, Mr Sherwood received both the hearing technology and professional support he needed for the next stage of his hearing journey.

Giving hearing technology a new purpose
Mr Sherwood’s story also shows the wider value of donating unused hearing aids. Modern hearing aids contain advanced technology and may still have years of useful life remaining. When a suitable device is donated and refurbished, it can support another person rather than being left unused or discarded. This creates a more sustainable approach to hearing care; it reduces unnecessary waste while helping the UK Veterans Hearing Foundation provide affordable hearing support to more former Armed Forces personnel. Not every donated hearing aid will be suitable for reuse; however, each donation gives our team the opportunity to assess whether the device could help another veteran.
A positive step towards clearer hearing
The Gifted Hearing Aid Pathway provided an affordable route to suitable hearing aids and professional care. His story reflects why flexible support matters.
Not every veteran needs the same level of financial assistance; some require full support, while others are able to contribute toward their hearing aids. Both routes help former Armed Forces personnel access better care based on their individual circumstances. By combining the donated hearing technology, professional audiology service, and personalised aftercare, we aim to help more veterans take positive steps towards clearer hearing and better communication.
